When most people think deep fried almost instantly they think of fried chicken. The traditional southern delicacy may be the most common but it is not the only recipe out there. As a matter of fact almost anything edible can be deep fried to varying degrees of deliciousness. I have put together a few of my favorite “out there” dessert recipes here for you to enjoy. They might seem a little odd at first but I think those with an open mind and daring taste buds will enjoy them.
Deep Fried Snickers Bar:
1/2 cup sifted flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 cup cold water 1 pinch baking powder 2 Snickers candy bars
Mix flour, cinnamon, salt and water thoroughly. Let the batter sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes. While waiting put a stick through each end of the candy bars. Now add the baking powder to your batter. Start heating your home deep fryers to approximately 375 degrees. Dip one of the Snickers bars into the batter, frying until golden brown. Drain the excess oil by placing the finished snicker bar onto a paper towel.
Deep Fried Kool-Aid
1/4 cup to 1/2 cup Kool-Aid 3 eggs 1/4 of sugar 1/2 tsp. of salt 2 tsp. baking powder 2 cups milk 3 2/3 cups of flour
Beat the eggs and sugar together to create the batter. Slowly add the dry ingredients and milk. Fry the batter until golden at 375 degrees. Drain excess oil by placing fried Kool-Aid ball onto a paper towel.
Deep Fried Ice Cream
1 quart vanilla ice cream 1 cup crushed frosted cornflakes 1 cup sweetened coconut flakes, or 1 cup chopped walnuts, or 1 cup cookie crumbs 2 large eggs 2 tablespoons sugar Vegetable oil, for frying Hot chocolate sauce, optional Whipped cream, optional
Take an ice cream scooper and make 4 large ice cream balls. Put these on a waxed paper lined sheet and cover it with plastic wrap. Now, freeze this for at least 2 ½ hours. Combine cornflakes with your choice of coconut, cookie crumbs or walnuts in a large bowl. Spread your mixture in a shallow dish. Place the balls of ice cream into your crumb mix and place in the freezer for roughly 60 minutes. Beat the eggs and sugar in a bowl. Dip your ice cream balls into the eggs and roll again into the crumb mixture. When completely coated freeze for 1 hour. Preheat your deep fryer to approximately 400 degrees. Fry each ice cream ball one at a time until golden brown. Put the ice cream balls into a dessert bowl and top with chocolate sauce and whipped cream if desired. Deep Fried Turkey:
3 gallons peanut oil for frying, or as needed 1 (12 pound) whole turkey, neck and giblets removed 1/4 cup Creole seasoning 1 white onion
In a turkey deep fryer, heat oil to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Be sure to leave room for the turkey, or the oil will spill over. Layer a large platter with food-safe paper bags. Rinse turkey, and thoroughly pat dry with paper towels. Rub Creole seasoning over turkey inside and out. Make sure the hole at the neck is open at least 2 inches so the oil can flow freely through the bird. Place the whole onion and turkey in drain basket. The turkey should be placed in basket neck end first. Slowly lower basket into hot oil to completely cover turkey. Maintain the temperature of the oil at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and cook turkey for 3 1/2 minutes per pound, about 45 minutes. Carefully remove basket from oil, and drain turkey. Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh; the internal temperature must be 180 degrees F (80 degrees C). If not cooked all the way, put back into turkey deep fryer a few more minutes. Finish draining turkey on the prepared platter. To reheat, simply plop it in the microwave.
